Our Services:
School Affiliation

To become an affiliate of MMS, please follow the guidelines and procedures below to complete the school affiliation process:

Guidelines for Preschool Affiliation

• Each classroom teacher for the 3-6 age group must hold a Montessori diploma by an AMI, AMS, or MACTE accredited preschool training center. The classroom teacher must be in charge and present in each classroom on a daily basis.

• The Montessori program must require that each child attend five days per week.

• Each classroom must be equipped with basic Montessori materials. This includes five distinct areas of the classroom:

1. Practical Life
2. Sensorial
3. Language
4. Mathematics
5. Geography and Science

The curriculum should also include Art and Music.

• Each class must have a mixed age group of 3 to 6 year old children (including preschool and kindergarten ages). Beginning classrooms will be exempted as long as there is a plan to meet this requirement.

• Each class should have an extended period of uninterrupted work.

• The school must meet State requirements and hold a valid license. The license should be displayed in a prominent place.

Any deviations from these guidelines will be discussed with the Affiliations Committee. Their recommendation will then be presented to the Board of Directors for determination. The Michigan Montessori Society reserves the right to refuse or to revoke any affiliation.

Procedures for Preschool Affiliation

Please be sure to complete all of the following requirements:

• Fill out the application, listing the names of all current teachers and noting any changes in your program.

• A $50 fee for one level of affiliation per site (i.e. Preschool)
• A $25 fee for an additional level (i.e. Elementary)

NOTE: If an application is denied by MMS, all paid fees, less an administration fee of $10 shall be refunded.

• A copy of a Montessori diploma for each teacher must accompany the application, unless previously submitted. If someone newly trained has not yet received his or her diploma, a letter stating this must accompany the application. The diploma must follow as soon as possible.

• For new affiliation applicants, your school will be visited to verify that you have a valid state license, that each class has basic Montessori materials, a mixed age group, and a classroom teacher who holds a Montessori diploma. If you are re-applying for affiliation after successful affiliation during the current school year, information will be verified and your school will be visited within the next 4 years.

• The Affiliations Committee will make its recommendation for approval to the Board of Directors as soon as all requirements are met. The Michigan Montessori Society reserves the right to refuse or revoke any affiliation.

• Upon approval, your school will receive a certificate by mail and will be listed on the MMS website.

Guidelines for Elementary Affiliation

• Each classroom teacher (or intern) for the appropriate age group (6-9 or 9-12) must hold a Montessori diploma by an AMI, AMS, or MACTE accredited elementary training center. The classroom teacher must be in charge and present in each classroom on a daily basis.
